The ESTS International MCA-Accredited (STCW ISPS) Ship Security Officer & Anti-Piracy Course is a 3-day, fully-comprehensive and information-packed course
designed to meet the requirements for training laid out in the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS Code) and the guidance laid out in the SOLAS Regulations 1974. The Ship Security Officer (SSO) position was formalised under the regulations as listed and the training is a mandatory requirement for all those wishing to fulfil the role of the Ship Security Officer on vessels over 500 gross tonnes. The course is instructed by certified Maritime Security Training Specialists, approved by the Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA), the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and the Merchant Navy Training Board (MNTB).

The Ship Security Officer (SSO) course as defined in section A/2.1.6 (and section A/12.1) of the ISPS Code, and Part 104, subpart B, 105.215 of the Maritime Transportation Security Act (MTSA) also pays particular attention to the duties and responsibilities with respect to the security of a ship, for ensuring the development of a Ship Security Assessment, and for, implementing, maintaining and updating a Ship Security Plan

Training Certification:

Regulation VI/5, paragraph 1 and Section A-VI/5, paragraphs 1 to 4 of the STCW Convention and Code 1978,  as amended and incorporates Proficiency in Security Awareness and Designated Security Duties laid down in Regulation VI/6 and Section A-VI/6 of the STCW Convention and Code. In order to receive the Ship Security Officer (SSO) Qualification you must meet the MCA entry requirement of possessing 12 months sea service within either the Royal Marines, Merchant Navy, Royal Navy, on vessels of more than 80gt or 24m, or be able to show an equivalent level of seagoing experience and possess knowledge of ships' operation. Candidates without the pre-course experience will receive a certificate of Proficiency in Designated Security Duties (PDSD), to be upgraded to the Ship Security Officer (SSO) on completion of the basic entry requirements.

Course Aim:

To instruct the SSO Course Candidate how to effectively provide SSO-related duties and to effectively conduct a Ship Security Assessment (SSA) and provide and establish an effective Ship Security Plan (SSP) under the relevant ISPS Code requirements at Security Levels 1 to 3. On completion of the Training, you will have sufficient knowledge and understanding and skills enabling you to undertake the assigned security duties on board ship including at minimum the ability to (A) Manage the Ships' Security and Non-Security Personnel (B) Recognise security risk and threats (C) Undertake regular security inspections (D) Properly maintain and use ship security equipment and systems. (E) Conduct Ship Security Assessments (SSA). (F) Maintain and make recommendations to the Ship Security Plan (SSP).

Attendance & Course Entry
Pre-Requisites: For full STCW Certification a minimum of 12 months relevant sea time or experience in related Service (Navy, Marines, Merchant Navy, Coastguard etc) unless MCA Waiver obtained.
Entry Requirements: Minimum Age: 18 | No Serious Criminal Convictions
Assessment Methods: Continuous assessment will be conducted during the course theory with Q&A sessions throughout the course. Students are actively encouraged to participate and contribute where they are able.
