About the SSO
This is the first fully online,
DfT UK Maritime
and Coastguard Agency
(MCA) Approved (STCW ISPS) Proficiency as
Ship Security Officer (SSO) Course made up
of three modules.
Written by MCA Certified
Ship Security & Company Security Officers,
this course covers the six
Learning Outcomes required under the
knowledge, Understanding & Proficiency (KUP)
of the Merchant Navy Training Board (MNTB)
in accordance with the ISPS Code.
Who should attend?
Those Ship’s officers who
have been or are likely to be appointed as
the Ship Security Officers under the ISPS
Code should take this online SSO Course.
A minimum of twelve months
seagoing service on vessels over 80 gross
tonnage or 24 meters is required to qualify
for an STCW compliant Ship Security Officer
Certificate. Any SSO Candidates without the
required pre-course experience will receive
an endorsed certificate of Proficiency in
Designated Security Duties (PDSD) which can
be upgraded to an SSO qualification free of
charge once evidence is obtained that the

Assessment (Applies to Module 3 Only)
Candidates are assessed in Module 3
which consists of an online test made up of
60 randomised multi-choice or true or false
answer questions and text matching exercises
along with a short essay requirement.
Candidates must achieve a pass mark of 70%
to successfully pass this course.
